Introduction

I have specialized in transportation (passenger and freight) and travel subjects for more than 35 years, though I have, at times, covered many other subjects, from politics to sports.

I have a degree in journalism and have also attended advanced workshops in technical writing. My early work included five years with United Press International (UPI) as a reporter and bureau manager.

I have always seen writing and photography as components of telling stories. I frequently supply illustrated features that consist of both my writing and photography. However, I also undertake projects where I provide only writing or only photography. I have an extensive stock photo file that falls into two general areas: transportation coverage (all modes, with emphasis on railroads and rail transit) and general geographic coverage (North Carolina and Virginia in the U.S.; Austria in Europe, with some coverage of other European countries.)

I've contributed content to a wide range of magazines, including American Heritatge, Executive Traveler, The History Channel Magazine, Home & Away, HSToday (Homeland Security Today), Railfan & Railroad, Railway Age, Trains, as well as several photography and business publications. I have supplied stock photography to most major textbook publishers.

I speak and read German fluently. I was born in Vienna, Austria, and came to the U.S. with my parents when I was a child. I have been a U.S. citizen for many years. I also have some basic knowledge of French.
